Official Response to H.R.1: Tax Cuts and Jobs Act
Share |

Dear APSA Members,

In light of the House of Representatives’ recently passed bill H.R.1: Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, we want to express our shared concerns regarding the potential tax hike on graduate students and reassure our members that we stand strongly behind our mission to support physician-scientist trainees.

APSA supports maintaining the tax treatment of tuition waivers to graduate students in its current form. The proposed changes will increase the financial burden on current and future trainees, thereby hindering the well-being of the physician-scientist pipeline. While the Senate tax plan preserves the tax-free tuition waivers supporting our members’ education, the two bills will ultimately need to be reconciled. Therefore, legislators in the House and Senate still have an opportunity to address this issue.

APSA encourages our members and the community at large to engage in discussions on the importance of graduate education and raise awareness of the potential ramifications of this tax plan for trainees. Additionally, please continue to share your concerns with us and reach out to your Representatives and Senators.

Overall, as representatives of the physician scientist trainee community -- the next generation of leaders in science and medicine -- we strongly encourage the preservation of tax-free tuition waivers for graduate students.
